Kia's 2026 hybrid lineup covers four distinct vehicle types: a compact crossover, a mid-size SUV, a three-row SUV, and a full-size family van. Each uses a different version of the hybrid powertrain and serves a different kind of driver — but they all share the same goal of reducing fuel consumption compared to their gas-only equivalents. The all-new K5 emerges in the Kia lineup with accolades from around the world. Just when the industry is trying to suffocate the sports sedans in the automotive landscape, Kia doubled down and created a masterpiece. With a futuristic design, an all-turbo lineup of engines, and a driver-centred design, the K5 offers a refreshing and exclusive option among the sea of SUVs on the road.
Here, we introduce the 2021 Kia K5 and compare it to a competitor, the 2021 Hyundai Sonata.
The 2021 Kia K5 offers a more robust drivetrain
The Kia K5 LX, EX and GT models feature a 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain that generates 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. The Hyundai Sonata also includes a 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder that outputs the same horsepower and torque as the K5's primary engine. Both 1.6L lineups have an 8-speed automatic transmission, too. However, there is a major difference.
The K5 includes all-wheel drive as standard equipment in all 1.6L models, but the Sonata does not offer all-wheel drive. AWD is essentially a must-have in many parts of Canada, and it any car that does not have it or offer it is disadvantaged.
Moreover, the 1.6L is not the only powertrain available with the K5. The 2.5L Turbo GDI is standard on the K5 GT, and it produces 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. This is way more than the Sonata can offer, putting the K5 at the top of the list in terms of power and performance.
The 2021 Kia K5 offers advanced safety and convenience
The K5 also offers a driving experience focused on safety. Systems include: Forward Collision Warning, Standard Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Standard Driver Attention Warning, Standard Lane Following Assist, and Collision Avoidance Assist - Junction Turning.
The K5 also features convenient, connected technologies. The available 10.25-inch infotainment display links to a server-based available navigation system that updates with current traffic data, enabling you to find the quickest route. The intuitive user interface also includes Bluetooth wireless connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and available satellite radio. A Premium Audio system is also available with a family of Bose speakers.
