Signing Up for Variablegrid Plus at a Kia Dealership: What to Expect

Signing Up for Variablegrid Plus at a Kia Dealership: What to Expect

Home charging is the part of EV ownership that makes many Quebec shoppers hesitate. Variablegrid Plus adds a reward on top of it. These answers cover who qualifies, what the charger requirement means, how the payout works and what happens at the dealership.

What Is Variablegrid Plus, and Who Can Enroll?

Variablegrid Plus is a 3-year subscription tied to charging your Kia EV at home. It runs through the Clean Fuel Regulation program, a federal initiative that requires producers and importers of gasoline and diesel to gradually reduce the carbon intensity of their fuels through 2030.

Eligible Kia EV owners can sign up at an EV-certified Kia dealership from now until 2030. Enrollment happens at the dealership, and the Variablegrid Plus rewards page calls it simple.

Do I Need a Variablegrid Charger?

Yes. An existing Variablegrid charger or a newly purchased one is required for eligibility. If you buy one through a Kia dealership with the 3-year subscription, you can receive up to $350 in additional savings upfront on the hardware (Energy Management System bundle).

The charger itself is a separate product from the rewards. The Variablegrid charger and its Energy Management System (EMS) monitor your home’s power use in real time and send your charger whatever electricity is available. When household demand is low, charging ramps up. When appliances are running, it scales back.

That matters in older homes. Over half of homes in Canada can’t support Level 2 charging without expensive upgrades, and this system works with the electrical capacity already in your home. Panel upgrades can run from $5,000 to over $10,000.

How Much Can I Earn, and How Do I Get Paid?

Rewards are up to 10¢ per kWh ($0.10) on eligible electricity used to charge your Kia EV at home. Billing stays the same, and there is no change to how or when you charge.

Here is the scale. An EV4 driven 20,000 km a year could earn up to $360 paid out yearly. That estimate uses an EV4 Wind Premium FWD and 3,600 kWh for 20,000 km.

Your own total can differ. Driving style, acceleration and braking habits, speed, vehicle age and condition, temperature, weather, traffic, AWD or four-wheel-drive use, air conditioning and powered accessories all play a part.

Rewards build in your Variablegrid account. Once the balance reaches $50, you can withdraw the funds.

What Happens at the Dealership?

The visit follows three steps:

  1. Discuss your eligibility as a Kia EV owner or purchaser.
  2. Select or confirm the qualifying Variablegrid charging solution.
  3. Enroll in the 3-year subscription.

Then you charge at home and earn on eligible charging. Kia EV buyers can also include the cost of the Variablegrid EMS and home charger in their vehicle financing.
