The 2023 Kia Niro was unveiled yesterday by Kia at the New York Auto Show. The world debut of the new Kia electrified small SUV happened last fall, but the unveiling in New York this week provided us with more information about this new generation of Kia Niro.
The Kia Niro is a unique vehicle in the industry. It is a small utility vehicle designed for the city and young families that is offered in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric versions. Very few models offers so many electrified options and the 2023 Kia Niro will continue with its multiple powertrain choices. These choices have been significantly improved for 2023, however.
More range in the 2023 Kia Niro PHEV and Kia Niro EV
The most important changes can be found in the 2023 Kia Niro PHEV and the 2023 Kia Niro Electric. The PHEV version gets a more powerful electric motor which offers 62 KW instead of 45 KW for an extra 41 horsepower. Moreover, the battery now has a capacity of 11.1 kWh which should improve all-electric range by 11 km. The 2023 Kia Niro PHEV should now be able to go 53 km on electric power alone.
As for the fully electric 2023 Kia Niro, it delivers 201 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque. The battery increases slightly to 64.8 kWh but the range now is set at 407 km versus 385 for the current model. That means that the new Kia Niro EV will offer more range than the Chevrolet Bolt EUV and almost identical range to the Hyundai Kona EV.
More Luxury and Features in the 2023 Kia Niro
Other key improvements made to the 2023 Kia Niro include a fully redesigned interior which is a lot more modern and has a lot more technology. You will find two large 10.25-inch screens as well as heads-up display and new digital controls in the centre console. There's more connected technology as well with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa as well as ambient lighting and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which are now wireless. The 2023 Kia Niro is also more spacious with more interior legroom and 646 L of total cargo space.
